We ended our gender roles discussion with a question: Where does the divine come in? I was impressed by that question, and it set off my brain into thought. What does it mean to be divinely male or female? Recently I have been pondering about divine nature and what it means. This subject is a big deal for me, and I think for other college students as well. Right now we are figuring out who we are, and we are making decisions about who we will become! It is an exciting time and a overwhelming time. This is our defining moment! And to understand who we are and why we are, then our purpose is clear and our decisions are easier.
I found a quote that put things in perspective. Elder Bednar:
“[Gender] in large measure defines who we are, why we are here upon the earth, and what we are to do and become. For divine purposes, male and female spirits are different, distinctive, and complementary. … The unique combination of spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional capacities of both males and females were needed to implement the plan of happiness” (“Marriage Is Essential to His Eternal Plan,” Liahona, June 2006, 51; Ensign, June 2006, 83).

I find it very interesting that we as Americans have a class system that is not talked about, pre say, but is acknowledge every day. Why do we put others, and ourselves, into categories like cereal brands? Is it beneficial in anyway? Not really. So what if you are not Raisin Bran. You didn’t come from the same factory nor do you have the same nutritional value, but you still are a grain used as food, which is the definition of a cereal. Cheerios are not the same as Froot Loops, and I realize there is a difference. Difference gives variety and variety is good, but it should not be used to perceive others as better or worse. We are different but have a common purpose and that makes relationships, people, and life a beautiful thing.

I believe that the family is an eternal relationship, but even if you don't believe in the eternities I know that you can still see family's vital importance in your life. You don't have to have a biological mother feeding you everyday and tucking you in at night to feel cared for, or a father that looks like you to get advice on your personal thoughts. You don't have to have a sister with the same noes to have someone who doesn't mind to wipes your tears or brothers with the same hair to feel a family connection. I believe that family is all around you. I believe that EVERYONE needs the roles that family brings in their life. Who is someone without a father figure? Have you felt your best friend to be your "sister" or "brother?" Why is that? Because there is a relationship where love is felt and often their guide. Family is where love is. Who is someone without love?
